Mercury increased muscle car profile with the introduction of the 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. With inspiration from rivals as Camaro Z28 and Chevelle SS, and custom Ford Boss 302 and Mach 1 Mustang, Ford introduced the Eliminator in April 1969. Eliminator came with a wide range of engines from Trans Am-inspired solid-lifter 302-cid small block 428 — cid Cobra Jet big block.

Mercury launched Mercury Cougar sports coupe, in 1967 as a luxury-touring alternative to the pony-car crew. It was a mature style and luxurious interior appointments and is built on a stretched Ford Mustang chassis with three inches longer wheelbase to improve ride.
